Attorney says it is possible to fight Revenge Porn

2017 was the year social media and Facebook became rampant for revenge porn as a page was opened called Belizean cheaters. It was used to shame people by sharing their nudes. Attorney Lisa Shoman says it has happened once again via a link to hundreds of images. She has taken on the task of representing people who have been abused by the latest form of revenge porn as a new link has surfaced with hundreds of images. The only catch is that to get the images removed, the host must be notified that it is unauthorized use of that person’s photo.

Attorney Lisa Shoman: In February of last year that was the height of the Belizean cheaters phenomenon but this has been going on for a long time. The latest edition is an email address that will take you via a link to a place where there are videos and photographs so I was alerted to this by someone who inboxed me explained how it work, I went to look and there it was, hundreds of images and quite a few videos posted up where it can be shared, interestingly enough the internet is not interested whether you think it is an indecent image. The only reason that you image can be removed generally is either its depicting a harmful or illegal act, a beating, a murder or you say it is unauthorized use of your own image. Everybody owns their own image but once it gets out there, it lives forever, it’s used, it miss used, it’s is shared. It is only by threatening companies or host that it is unauthorized use of your image that you stand a good chance of you getting it taken down. I have gotten this done for quite a few clients, it’s generally, I don’t think anybody has paid me to do that, its pro bono work and I have done it and it can take quite a bit of effort sometimes but it comes down. Young people who are sharing images in order to prove that they are attracted or attractive to somebody else and once those images have been sent you lose total and complete control of how they are shared. I don’t say that to shame or embarrass anyone about what they’ve done. What you have done is what you have done but understand that the consequences can live forever and so there is a culture right now especially among younger people of sharing of images, sometimes privately, sometimes not and there is a great amount of peer pressure but once the images are out there, they can and they will be used to bully you.

Shoman also said that there is a trend that young people are taking and sharing their images with others and they do not fully appreciate the long-term consequences.

Attorney Lisa Shoman: Young people because i find it is generational, there are many young people who are sharing images in order to prove that they are attracted or attractive to somebody else and once those images have been sent you lose total and complete control of how they are shared. I don’t say that to shame or embarrass anyone about what they’ve done. What you have done is what you have done but understand that the consequences can live forever and so there is a culture right now especially among younger people of sharing of images, sometimes privately, sometimes not and there is a great amount of peer pressure but once the images are out there, they can and they will be used to bully you
