Authorities Investigate Fake Labels on Seized Alcohol

Authorities have launched an investigation following the confiscation of what we understand are eight hundred and fifty cases of liquor bearing fake Supplies Control Unit labels. On Monday, Customs officers searched the Victor L. Bryant warehouse on Chetumal Street in Belize City.  During that raid, a wide range of alcohol beverages was found with fraudulent ‘Belize Market’ stickers. The Comptroller of Customs, Estelle Leslie, who has become known for avoiding the media, has not responded to our request for an interview.  The department did, however, issue a statement, confirming the raid, and the discovery of liquor suspected to be uncustomed and bearing fraudulent Supplies Control Unit labels. The department says it is conducting a detailed exercise to confirm the quantity and value of the seized liquor and collaborating with the Supplies Control Unit regarding the apparent fraudulent labels. The department did not say how the liquor made it to the warehouse but emphasized that this is an ongoing investigation. Our newsroom reached out to the Director of the Supplies Control Unit, Lennox Nicholson, who declined to provide an interview, but stated that he was certain that no one from his office was involved in the fraudulent act. Nicholson told our newsroom that his department is working with Customs and hopes to provide all the assistance it can to aid in their investigation. The bust is being estimated as more than a quarter million dollars in tax losses for the government.
