Avian influenza poultry virus detected by BAHA in northern Belize

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) has identified cases of avian influenza in poultry at a broiler farm in Blue Creek Village, Orange Walk. Last week, BAHA received positive results for the virus after sending samples to the United States for testing. However, there is not much concern for residents of the public because according to BAHA poultry meat and eggs on the local market remain safe for human consumption. Dr. Miguel Depaz, BAHA’s Director of Animal Health Department, spoke to Love News this evening about the organization’s efforts to act swiftly to eradicate the virus in Belize and contain its spread.

Dr. Depaz says that while the disease can be spread to humans, the risk is minimal given that the virus has not been detected in any poultry products outside of Blue Creek Village.

BAHA is advising all poultry farmers to strengthen biosecurity programs and to adhere to BAHA restrictions.
