The trial of Eli Lopez Avila and Milton Maza charged with the murder of attorney Richard Stuart and his wife Maria Stuart was to commence today before Justice Colin Williams. However, it was adjourned until tomorrow due to some technical difficulties. In 2010, the Stuarts were viciously stabbed to death at their home located in West Landivar in Belize City. The double murder shocked the community and the legal fraternity mourned the loss of one of their own. The Crown is being represented by Crown Counsels Killeru Awich and Rene Montero. Meanwhile, Avila is being represented by attorney Leeroy Banner and Maza is being represented by attorney Oscar Selgado who was not present in court today. The Crown intends to call twenty witnesses and the evidence that will be presented to the court is allegedly purely circumstantial. The Crown also intends to rely on a caution statement given to the police by Maza in which he blamed Avila for the murders. It must be noted that the attorneys are representing the men probono and it has been reported that the case took so long to be brought for trial because no attorney wanted to represent the accused.
