B.T.L. Begins CEO Search

B.T.L. is in the market for a new chief Executive Officer. The company recently added the post of CEO to its list of job offerings on its website, which means that current CEO Ivan Tescum, will be demitting office. Tescum had been with the company since 2007 and in 2012 he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer. Tescum, who is also a chartered accountant, took up the post of CEO in 2019. The deadline for the submission of the application and other relevant documents for the post is April 12. Prime Minister John Briceno explained that Tescum’s contract is coming to an end and the board of directors chose to advertise the post.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “What has happened is that the CEO’s contract is coming to an end I think it’s in May and in the contract the board needs to give notice whether the contract is going to be renewed or not. If he’s not given notice then it is an automatic rollover. So what the board has decided to do is to make an announcement for the position of CEO. It doesn’t mean that the present CEO cannot apply, of course the present CEO can apply and if anybody else wants to apply then that is their right. I do believe that a number of people have been looking at the possibility of that job being open so the ones that are interested I am sure that they need less than three weeks to be able to put in their application.”

Reporter: We know that in order to get a job like this you have to be politically favored.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “That’s not true. What we want to do, because if you look at what happened at BEL we stayed with the present person because we believe that the CEO for BEL it was good for BEL. So what we want to be able to do is to be BEL. Mr.Mencias I think he’s good for BEL so we rehired him and likewise if the present CEO if the board believes that he is doing a good job for the company I’m sure that they’re going to renew his contract unless somebody, a new that can bring fresh ideas or a new direction for the company comes in. But that’s for the board to decide.”

Briceno also confirmed that, among the interested parties is CEO in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance Jose Urbina.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I’ve heard that he probably may have some interest. As you know he has worked at both SMART and BEL. He has an engineering degree and an MBA so from just the looks of it you could think that he probably would fit the profile but he would have to go through the process. I think we need to move away from political favor to more to if he would be adequate for the job probably on the face of it you would want to think so but when you go through actual interview process that’s when the board will be able to decide who would be the person best suited for the job.”

Tesucum’s departure comes months after two members of BTL’s board of directors left the company. In November last year, Michael Bowen and attorney Denise Courtenay stepped down for personal reasons.
