BAHA to test for fungi affecting banana plantations

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) will be having a simulation exercise from November 25 to 29 in order to assess Belize’s response in the event that fusarium wilt of banana is detected in Belize. Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 is a fungus which causes the death of banana trees. 

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) will be having a simulation exercise from November 25 to 29 in order to assess Belize’s response in the event that fusarium wilt of banana is detected in Belize. Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 is a fungus which causes the death of banana trees.  The simulation will be in collaboration with the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA), the Minister of Agriculture, Banana Growers Association and FYFFES. The activities will take place at the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA), BAHA Plant Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Big Creek Port, and a Plantain Farm in Georgetown Village, Stann Creek District. For now, the OIRSA Region including Belize and the wider Caribbean is free of this devastating banana disease
