The Briceno Administration has decided to appoint Madam Louise Esther Eugenie Blenman as the Chief Justice of Belize. The government’s decision to do so has attracted criticism from members of the public who believe that Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana should have been given the post. We point out though that Arana did not apply for the position and we are told that she will be elevated to the Court of Appeal. The Bar Association of Belize weighed in on the matter today. Via press release, the Association stated that Blenman is a seasoned Caribbean jurist with over 33 years in the legal profession in the region including 10 years as a Justice of Appeal on the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court making her a suitable candidate to become the Chief Justice of Belize. The Association was a part of the interview panel which reviewed the applications of all 8 applicants and says it provided its view and recommendation to the Office of the Prime Minister. According to the release, the Association is satisfied with the transparency of the process utilized and the selection of Justice of Appeal Blenman as the next Chief Justice of Belize.
