At the top the news, we heard from the President of the Belize Business Bureau, Arturo Lizarraga . He called for the immediate implementation of the five-dollar-per-hour minimum wage. Lizarraga also had a lot of other things to say especially of the last UDP Government. In the 12-minute interview, Lizarraga gave the Barrow administration a scathing review of its policy affecting small businesses. Lizarraga said that the UDP was the worst when it came to small businesses.
Arturo Lizzaraga, President, Belize Business Bureau: “We need to move forward. We’ve just come out of the worst COVID and the worst administration. The last administration was very terrible for small businesses. They nationalised companies and they were very bad business and we’ve seen it as they’ve mentioned in this presentation where foreign direct investment was lost by 50% per capita for the last ten years went down, down, down, down and what we saw is that we didn’t have access to the information to see it, and to report on it, and to discuss it because, it was hidden from us. I think there’s an opportunity with the recalibration of the GDP. There’s a little bit more fiscal space so I think now is the opportunity to give the people, the vast majority of people, a break.”
