BCCI and Orange Walk Town Council condemn price gouging

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) is calling on businesses to refrain from effecting any price increases on the essential supplies during this time when the threat of COVID-19 is looming over the world. The price increases have been noted on items such as hand sanitizers, masks, and disinfectants.

While the Belize Bureau of Standards has indicated that no official complaint has been made to them, BCCI is still appealing to the business community to avoid raising prices. BCCI also took the opportunity to publicly pledge its support and willingness to partner with GOB and all relevant stakeholders in any and all legitimate and prudent efforts geared towards ensuring the most humanitarian approach to dealing with the COVID-19 challenges facing the country. The Orange Walk Town Council has also issued a release on the price increase.  They have verified that stores are participating in price gouging for sanitation products. They stated that they condemn this action, and that it is immoral, unethical, and even inhumane. They are asking residents to immediately report stores that are engaged in price gouging to them. As the mayor of the Town is the chairman of the Trade Licensing Board, they warn store owners that they will be looking at every possible sanction within the law to deal with those who are taking advantage of residents during this time.
