BDF Commandant Responds to Criticism Over Sarstoon Confrontation

The Commandant of the Belize Defense Force has responded to the harsh criticism over the confrontation with Guatemalan Armed Forces troops last week. As we’ve reported, Brigadier General Azariel Loria and a group of soldiers and media personnel were aggressed during a tour of the Sarstoon Island. The GAF instructed the Belizean group to leave their territory and began to trail their vessel after an exchange of words with General Loria. The incident took place on Belize’s side of the river and was scrutinized by many who felt Loria’s position was too laid back. Yesterday, he responded to those critics and explained that diplomacy is the best weapon in such situations.

General Loria added that the public is not fully aware of the BDF’s role and stated that the military is not focused on creating escalations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to send a protest to the Guatemalan government over the incident.
