Reports to Love News suggest that the Belize Defence Force is low on ammunition. We are told that the BDF has been unable to acquire ammunition for its soldiers because of financial issues. Today, we asked the Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence, Oscar Mira, about it. Minister Mira explains what the challenge is.
Oscar Mira, Minister of State, Ministry of Defence: “We don’t have a nomination bill to pay. We do have an issue in procuring ammunition but that is because the whole procurement system of ammunition in the world right now is very short. As you may know most of the ammunition is going to Ukraine but we are working to ensure that we have the amount of ammunition that we need. We have operational ammunition we don’t have a shortage of operational ammunition. The shortage of ammunition that we have at the BDF is for training so therefore we have to scale back on the live firing exercises that we normally do but for operational purposes we have enough ammunition. We have made sure that the operational ammunition is adequate. As in anything you know the training part of is what we are working on. We have been in contact with our counterparts in Mexico and other countries to procure training ammunition not operational ammunition.”
