BDF Private heading to Merida for Medical Treatment following Accident

 

Belize Defense Force (BDF) soldier Private Fidel Williams was stationed at the Sarstoon Forward Operating Base when he was injured on the 14th of November, 2018.   Private Williams was walking on the pier when his foot hit a deteriorated plank that caused him to fall. A piece of steel penetrating his head causing severe eye injury. Since then the affected eye was removed during a surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and he was kept under observation by the Ophthalmologist after which he was transferred to the Force’s Medical Center in Ladyville. Private Williams, in the company of a Combat Medic, from the Force Hospital leaves Belize today for Clinica De Merida where he will undergo an assessment for a prosthetic eye replacement. His appointment is scheduled for Friday.  The BDF has sent a press release to combat rumors on social media that claimed Private Williams had been asked to resign from the military.  The press release says “he will continue to serve as a soldier. The Belize Defence Force Benevolent Fund makes provision for compensation to Private Williams for the loss of his eye.  Clinic De Merida has agreed to provide this service at the earliest and he should return at the end of the weekend.
