For years illegal fishing in the Sarstoon River has been taking place and the number one perpetrators were the Guatemalans. It is an issue that has been brought up time and time again with activists appealing to the Government of Belize to have the issue addressed. And it seems that the issue has been addressed because as the BDF’s Acting Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Jermaine Burns, shared, this type of activity has significantly decreased in recent months.
Lt. Col. Jermaine Burns, Acting Chief of Staff, B.D.F.: “The most recent encounter would have been about a month ago if I can remember off the top of my head and that was just a sighting. By the time the soldiers got to the area the folks had left. It was a sighting that was reported by some random folks saying that there was fishing happening whilst they were in or traversing the area and so we haven’t had any significant cases over the past few weeks that we can report on of illegal fishing in the area.”
