A swarm of bees disrupted the peace in a Belmopan neighbourhood, stinging several people near Toucan and Oriole Streets. The area is a busy pedestrian route connecting East Ring Road to the Belmopan bus terminal. Residents say the bee problem has persisted for more than two weeks, creating concern for people who regularly use the route. Today, one elderly man was taken to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment after being stung. Several other people reportedly suffered minor injuries. LJay Wade was on the scene and has the following report.
Ljay Wade, Belmopan Correspondent: “For the residents of Belmopan regarding some bees that are currently in the area. Specifically, between the areas of Toucan Street and Oriole Street. This morning an elderly man was attacked by the bees. He has been transported to the Western Regional Hospital where they’re currently conducting some tests on him just to see if he’s okay, but he was attacked. Now, I’m not sure what type of bees they are those details are still forthcoming. But there are a lot of bees currently in this area and persons are asked to be careful. So the bees are attacking persons. Now from what I learned on the ground by a good Samaritan, I should call him, he said that he was aware of these bees for at least two weeks now and that nothing was being done about it. So he took it upon himself to set up these caution tapes and he also took it upon himself to poison the bees. He said he Googled it. He looked up what type of poison to use. He said he attacked the bees. So they should be dying. School is opening soon and if you know the St. Anne’s Primary School is literally right across the sidewalk from where the bees are.”
Authorities are advising people avoid the area and to not disturb the bees. Anyone who experiences difficulty breathing, swelling or another severe reaction after being stung should seek medical attention immediately.
