BEL Prepares for Potential Power Disruptions from Hurricane Beryl

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) says will be working to keep service uninterrupted as Hurricane Beryl makes landfall up north. Predictions of Beryl making landfall in the Yucatán Peninsula tonight have raised concerns about the impact the Category 3 hurricane will have on Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad’s (CFE) transmission system, to which Belize Electricity Limited’s (BEL) grid is connected. BEL says that past hurricanes have shown that CFE is capable of maintaining the power supply during a Category 2 hurricane, barring any serious complications from debris or lightning. The company notes, “In any case, we currently have sufficient in-country capacity to meet peak demand if CFE is unable to supply us with power. There is, of course, the possibility of changing circumstances; for example, excessive rains could affect the output from the bagasse-fueled power plants at Belcogen and Santander.” BEL adds that in this situation there should still be enough generation capacity to meet local demand, but again, this could change if extreme circumstances cause damage to the company’s infrastructure. The public is asked to be patient in the event of any interruptions.
