BEL Technician and his family attacked on Gill Street

Police are looking for the two people responsible for last night’s attack in which a BEL technician, Brian Perez died. It happened just before 8:00 p.m. on Gill Street in Belize City. Perez, 56-year-old Leticia Magana, 27-year-old Janine Sanchez, and a 14-year-old went grocery shopping. When they got to their house on Gill Street, two dark-skinned men attacked the family. Love News understands that one of the assailants, who was dressed in camouflage, was armed with a piece of metal and attacked Magana and the teenage girl. Both Magana and the minor received injuries. When Perez heard the commotion, he came out of the house to see what was going on. Perez was attacked by one of the assailants. A scuffle ensued between the two and the attacker took out a gun and shot Perez in the body. He had to undergo emergency surgery, but unfortunately, he died. Perez’s union, the Belize Energy Workers’ Union issued a rare statement today in which it mourned Perez’s passing and said that his life was taken away senselessly. The release goes on to say (quote) “We demand justice, but more than that we want to raise our voices and join the countless Belizean families who have lost their loved ones to gun violence. We call on the authorities to ensure that the proper investigations are carried out swiftly to bring to justice the person responsible. Like everyone else, we also question, how is this level of violence still allowed to exist within our small community?” End quote. As we told you today, the assailants ran into the family’s backyard and disappeared into nearby Ross Pen Road.
