Belize and Mexico have signed eight cooperation agreements. Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington and his Mexican counterpart Jose Antonio Meade signed the agreements in Mexico to strengthen the bilateral legal framework between the two countries. One of the agreements is the first bilateral agreement on air transport, as well as one formalizing the procedure for innocent passage of ships which facilitates navigation in their respective territorial waters. Agreements on energy management, Social Security, Intellectual Property Protection and Promotion of Patens, Climate Change Research, Wildlife Conservation, Guidance, and Consumer Protection were also signed. During the meetings he three Mexican commercial missions to Belize that took place in the last years, exploring opportunities in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields, as well as the institutional cooperation between the two countries to expedite the certification process for the export of Belizean livestock were highlighted. Minister Elrington became the fourth Belizeans to receive the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest award Mexico hands out to foreign citizens. In turn Secretary Meade was awarded the Order of Distinction from Belize. Minister Elrington was accompanied by Ministers Erwin Contreras and Herman Longsworth as well as CEO Lawrence Sylvester.
