Belize and several countries call for peace in Taiwan Strait

Belize’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations joined counterparts from various countries in calling for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.  The joint statement, which was signed by countries including Guatemala, Haiti, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Saint Lucia, says quote “We are gravely concerned by China’s continued military exercises surrounding Taiwan, which escalate tensions, pose a severe threat [to peace, stability and the rules-based international order], put regional security at risk and impact international trade and transportation” Unquote. The statement also urges the United Nations and the international community to urge China to quote “…cease its dangerous actions surrounding Taiwan immediately and restrain from attempting to alter the status quo…” End quote. The twelve countries say that China should be urged to respect the media line of the Taiwan Strait, which is a symbol for maintaining regional peace and stability and avoiding any military conflict between the two sides.
