The Belize Bank Limited is warning its customers about an ongoing scam circulating on social media. The bank issued a notice over the weekend that scammers are attempting to lure users into sending secure messages via Belize Bank Online Banking with promises of receiving deposits into their savings accounts. The scammers, operating under various aliases such as “Home Based Caribbean,” have been enticing users with claims that small investments can yield significant returns. Denise Godfrey, Marketing Manager with the Belize Bank, explained that the scam is being run on customers of various other institutions, and the bank issued the notice to encourage its customers to stay vigilant.
Denise Godfrey, Marketing Manager, Belize Bank Limited: “For the past two years the bank has been issuing these scam alerts just to reiterate the importance of keeping your information safe. From time to time customers will come to us or we would notice on social media that there’s a specific post claiming to be from Belize Bank requesting customers to deposit or to send a message somewhere so we just always want to reiterate the importance of keeping your information safe. Cases like these are not isolated to just the Belize Bank. The other financial institutions are facing the same. So it’s just about again as I said spreading awareness to our customers, reiterating our golden rules that the Belize Bank will never ask you to provide any credit card information, pin, username, passwords. Reminding them never to click on suspicious links and stuff like that you know ?’
We have confirmed that the Belize Police Department’s Cyber Crimes Unit is aware of the scam and is looking into the matter.
