Belize Bankers Association Warns of Online Scammers

Following a warning from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) regarding online scamming, the Belize Bankers Association (BBA) has issued a press release notifying customers that the banks will not be sending out emails or any other correspondence that would require the disclosure of personal banking information. The release further states that personal banking information should remain private, and that customers should contact their banks immediately if they feel that their banking information has been compromised or if they see any unauthorized transactions on bank statements. Perhaps most importantly, the release notes, quote, “While Banks may provide assistance to remediate inconveniences caused, disclosure of a customer’s personal banking information that unauthorized transactions to be performed on their account is the responsibility of the customer. Additionally, the Bankers Association strongly advises customers that they should avoid using their accounts to process transactions on behalf of third-parties.” End of quote.
