Belize Braces for Heavy Rains: Vigilance Urged in Coastal Areas

As it pertains to the heavy rains predicted for Belize, residents are being called upon to be vigilant and prepare.  The National Meteorological Service says that a surge in moisture is expected to hit on Thursday and last throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, the National Hydrological Service of Belize says it has been monitoring the situation and is issuing warnings in key areas of concern. Hydrologist Carmelita Blanco said that residents in the north and coastal areas need to be especially vigilant.

Carmelita Blanco, Hydrologist, National Horological Service: “According to the Met Office, one to two inches of rainfall for the north and central of Belize is expected for the next 24 hours. For three days accumulation, eight inches is expected. In regards to this, the National Hydrological Service advises residents to be in the alert for a possible chance of flooding especially in the Rio Hondo and the New River. Then we have also issued an urban flood alert that is in effect for low-lying areas in the northern and coastal part of the country.”

Blanco also said that areas in the south and west that were affected by wildfires remain a major concern for soil erosion.
