Belize Business Bureau president says government should have nationalized nightly boledo.
The President of the Belize Business Bureau, Arturo Lizarraga says he believes the government should have nationalized the nightly boledo and lotteries a long time ago. It has been almost a week since the Boledo draw has come to a screeching halt and there is still no indication of when it will return. Lizarraga, says that while he supports GOB’s move, there should have been a plan to ensure business persons are not affected by the loss of boledo earnings.
Arturo Lizarraga, President, Belize Business Bureau: “They should have acquired the Boledo from very early on and I think the issue there was that they weren’t sure whether he would comply and therefore there wasn’t any need to prepare a plan. Now that they’ve actually taken it over for non compliance they have to I believe they should make a big effort in trying to get the program back on track because like you said lots of vendors who make their little money off selling Boledo and there are also people who who use the game as a means of making ends meet so I do agree that there is a sense of urgency that we should get it back on track. We the government has acquired it, they understand the purpose for any NHI but we need to make it function so I think I agree with you.”
Reporter: What are your thoughts in terms of making sure we have Belizean vendors as well?
Arturo Lizarraga, President, Belize Business Bureau: “But who will tell you- I mean we still don’t know who are the real owners and quite possibly the real owners are Belizeans, big time Belizeans. But I think the issue should be government should acquire it just like BTL and BEL and they should operate it and I believe there is technology and qualified government officials that can make it function and so it shouldn’t be privatized again. I think that’s the issue then because if you take it from one person to give it to another person it wouldn’t make sense and I don’t think that was the intent.”
