Belize Canoeing Athletes Return from Pan American Games

After representing Belize at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, three of Belize’s top canoeing athletes are back in the country. This afternoon, Avis Guydis, Diana Velasquez, Amado Cruz, their coach Chris Guydis, and President of the Belize Canoeing Association Elvin Penner received a warm welcome home from the National Sport Council. The athletes put on stellar performances despite not placing in any of the main events. However, Cruz was able to dominate in the Men’s Final B K 1000-meter race and glided his way into first place. Love News spoke to Penner about the hard work that went into training the athletes and getting them to the event.

Penner also highlighted the performance of Velasquez and Guydis, who competed in the K2 women’s 500-meter race. He says that the home-grown athletes are a motivation to others.

Cruz is now ranked ninth in the Americas in canoeing; he is also one of the reigning champions of the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge.
