Staying with transportation: today was International Day of the Air Traffic Controller. This special day honors all the men and women who work to make air travel the safest possible mode of transport. According to the Civil Aviation Department, air traffic controllers help the department in ensuring that it stays true to its mission of promoting efficient and expeditious movement of domestic and international air transportation in Belize. Vejea Alvarez reports on the significance of the day in Belize.
The day was found in 1961 by Jacob Wachtel (wack-tell), who founded the Israel Air Traffic Controllers Association. He also advocated and founded the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (IFATCA) on October 20, 1961, with delegates from 12 different countries. Globally air traffic controllers assist pilots in landing more than one hundred thousand planes each day around the world.///
