Belize celebrates International Day of the Girl

International Day of the Girl – it is an observance declared by the United Nations with the aim to have the world remember, recognize and strive towards the empowerment of girls and their rights.  In Belize, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), particularly the United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit along with the Special Envoy for Women and Children have teamed up for this year’s observance.

Tisa Grant, Liaison Officer, UNFPA: “International Day of the Girl Child, really the day is just about spreading awareness about the issues affecting girls across the globe and of course across the respective countries that will look a little bit differently based on the culture and certain nuances of a country. The theme is focusing on how exactly we prepared our girls for a world of work where the world is transforming to one of innovation and automation; are our girls prepared to contribute to that type of world of work.”

Day of the Girl has been celebrated every year on October 11, since 2012.
