The Forest Department is joining the global community in celebrating International Day of Forests 2025, annually observed on March 21. Established by the United Nations in 2012, the day aims to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees, especially those outside of traditional forest areas. This year’s theme, “Forests and Food,” highlights the essential roles forests play in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. Forests provide more than just food; they offer critical services like soil fertility, water resource protection, and habitats for biodiversity. Forests also support climate regulation and economic stability, with up to 25% of medicinal drugs in developed countries derived from plants, and as much as 80% in developing countries. As part of its commitment to preserving and restoring forest ecosystems, the Forest Department has partnered with several organizations, including the Belmopan City Council and the National Climate Change Office, to plant timber, fruit, and ornamental trees in key areas. The initiative aims to restore green spaces and beautify the environment. Additionally, the Forest Department is hosting a Forests and Food photo competition and a high school trivia competition to engage the public and raise awareness. The department is also encouraging community participation in tree-planting events, promoting sustainable forest use, and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.
