Belize Celebrates Ombuds Day, Advocating for Accountability and Justice

Today marked the official celebration of “Ombuds Day”. Since its establishment in 1999, the Office of the Ombudsman has been a key institution in advocating for accountability and fairness. The value of this office remains significant as it continues to serve as a beacon of justice for citizens who seek recourse for injustices. Over the years, it has handled and resolved hundreds of cases, including complaints against law enforcement and other governmental bodies. At today’s event, Love News spoke with Emmanuel Ortiz, the Legal Officer and Attorney for the office of the Ombudsman to give us insight into the office’s importance.

The event was aimed at promoting good governance, improving the relationship between the government and the citizens to ensure that the voice of the residents are heard. We got to speak to the Ombudsman, Major Herman Gilbert Swazo, as he spoke of the effort his office is making to inform and educate the public.

Ombuds Day is held every second Thursday in the month of October.
