Belize Central Prison Prepared for Hurricane Season says Prison CEO

During a hurricane, it is advised that people should move to the safest area possible to weather the storm. But what happens the inmates at the Belize Central Prison, who can’t leave when the red flags go up. CEO of the Prison Virgilio Murillo says that the prison managed to withstand category one Hurricane Lisa last year, but not without sustaining damage; some of which is still evident in some areas today. Despite that fact, Murillo says he is confident in the prison’s hurricane readiness this year.

Virgilio Murillo, Chief Executive Officer, Kolbe Foundation: “Certainly Lisa damaged us real badly last year. I just didn’t bring the media to see it because it would have probably given everybody the idea that they can come in now and rescue the inmates. So I didn’t make anything public about that but we are recovering slowly still. We still have construction going on and we’re definitely hurricane-ready this time around.”

The National Meteorological Service of Belize has continuously urged Belizeans to remain vigilant this hurricane season, given the possibility of late-season storms. The Met Service also says that, thus far, the season has been within predicted ranges in terms of names of storms and hurricanes.
