A Belize City boat captain accused of aggravated assault is out on bail tonight. 23-year-old Corey Dean Betson appeared in court last week facing charges stemming from a January 17 incident on West Collet Canal. The prosecution alleges that Betson assaulted Jarod Richards Mitchell during an altercation. Initially, Betson pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of common assault, explaining that he intervened in a confrontation involving his friend and subsequently became involved in the fight. However, the Magistrate rejected Betson’s guilty plea. With no objection from the prosecution, Betson was granted bail in the sum of $300 plus one surety of the same amount, which he met. Betson is scheduled to return to court on March 26th, where he is expected to receive disclosure in the matter.
