Belize City Braces for Exciting 3-Day Weekend of Sports and Entertainment Events

A 3-day weekend is fast approaching, but unlike the other long weekends, people will be flocking to Belize City as the old capital is the venue for multiple sports and entertainment events.  We did some checks around the city and have found that many of the hotels are booked solid for the long weekend.  According to the President of the Belize Hotel Association, Reynaldo Malik, it is a very exciting time for the Belize Hotel Association.

Reynaldo Malik, President, Belize Hotel Association: “It’s very exciting particularly if you are a hotelier in Belize city or any of the environments around Belize. This excitement has been ongoing for a couple of weeks now. We’re just coming off of the Belize Volleyball Association hosting an international tournament that just concluded over the weekend and then starting today the Belize Basketball Federation is also hosting another international tournament as well Under 17 with the younger guys and that has participation from other countries like Puerto Rico, Panama, I think Jamaica is here as well. So that kicks off tonight and so when you take the basketball tournament and then you put it on top of the fact that this is also a long weekend where the BTB in its second installment of its festival tourism is doing the international music festival this weekend as well. It basically makes Belize City the epicenter of Belize for the next six days, more or less. And all that combined means that if you don’t have a room at any of the Belize City hotels right now you’re probably not going to have a room over the next week or so. So again, it’s really the culmination of a bunch of efforts, right? The BTB started last year to deciding they made a decisive effort to push festival tourism and by extension, sports tourism is a subculture of festival tourism as well. So what you have is both things happening at the same time and it’s doing really well. We only have about 600 rooms in the Belize City Market that are currently licensed right now. So that’s not a whole lot of rooms and in that 600 room, I think the Radisson is renovating probably 45% of their room inventory right now so that’s out of stock. And so it’s, you know, the average size of a hotel in Belize is less than 10 rooms so that makes it challenging doing a sort of smaller market like Belize City which is more known for business tourism than the actual regular hospitality type tourism that we’re used to around the country.”

Malik went on to comment on how this is a first, but is exactly what the Belize Tourism Board had aimed to achieve.

Reynaldo Malik, President, Belize Hotel Association: “We talk about it being a three-day weekend. Normally a three-day weekend means a bit of a mass exodus from the city everybody heading somewhere else, whether it’s to San Pedro or Caye Caulker or Hopkins or Placencia or Cayo normally people head out of the city. What we have is a bit of that three-day weekend scenario being turned on its head where people are headed into the city for this particular three-day weekend. So, I mean, like I said before, it is a planned thing and the outcome is exactly what was desired coming out of it.”
