The Belize City Council is looking into reforming the trade license system in the city. Mayor Bernard Wagner noted that this reform will introduce a new methodology with a focus on transparency and predictability. According to Mayor Wagner, this will address many of the issues businesses are experiencing.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City:For years we have been hearing businesses complain about trade licenses, ‘why can’t we know what we’re supposed to pay on a trade license.’ and this new trade license reform has been at the Prime Minister’s office for some time now. This will introduce a new methodology which focuses on good governance, revenue neutrality, more transparency and more predictability. Most business owners want to be able to predict what their trade license would be rather than having someone going there and doing that subjective type of exercise and not feeling that it is equitable. This new trade license regime will address all those issues and it will make for ease of doing business in Belize City and the country overall.”

The Mayor’s address was made during a Town Hall Meeting last night.
