Belize City Council Explores Options for Addressing Abandoned Properties

The Belize City Council continue to explore their options available to address the over two thousand abandoned properties in the city.  The idea was initially launched last month during a public meeting at the Belize Civic Centre, and according to Mayor Bernard Wagner, this is one of the projects very important to improve the safety and aesthetics of the city.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “When you have over 2,000 plus abandoned lots in a thriving city, in a city where we are trying to change the narrative of our city. We are trying to see how we can change these abandoned properties into livable spaces for our residents and that forum was the jump start of it because it brought to the fore that, listen if you have an abandoned property in the city and you live abroad, you must begin to get in contact with the city because what we are doing with those properties, we will essentially be looking at how we can repurpose some of them. We will look at how we could get those under legislation through the ministry of lands and have them, the minister, do some sort of declaration on those lands. And we essentially repurpose, resale to individuals who live in those communities and who want to raise families in those communities or turn them into livable spaces, businesses, etc. When we put together that 2000 plus abandoned lots we look at the entire picture, the entire city. We didn’t leave any area out. Clearly from that you could have seen some of the great concentration in some of the Mesopotamia area, the Fort George area, the areas that are in the south side that where we have so many people who want a piece of land in this city and for some reason or the other can’t get these lands. Now if you have a land that is in rot, crime, rodents, health hazard, then we must as a responsible city turn that negative situation into a positive situation for our city.”
