The Belize City Council hosted an official unveiling this morning of traffic lights erected at the junction of Central American Boulevard and Neal’s Pen Road in Belize City.  Mayor Bernard Wagner boasted that the lights are state of the art and has cost the council an amount in the six figure range.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “As you see here we have eight traffic lights and six pedestrian lights which really add value to people’s safety, resident’s safety in this area. I grew up in this area and it has grown tremendously, one time we used to be able to walk across this street but now with the development you have to continue to grow with development and ensure that you put in the necessary systems in place to ensure safety and the quality of life for our residents. We were able to achieve this with the assistance of our friends from Taiwan and we used the contractors out of San Ignacio they have very good experience in that area, they have a number of traffic lights and they have the experience so we went along with them.

Reporter: Do you know how it works exactly ? What’s the cycle to allow the flow of traffic ?

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City:  “We did some studies, our traffic management team for the last two weeks and we feel comfortable that it has brought order to this area.”

As noted by Mayor Wagner, partial financing came from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
