Belize City Council Launches Electric Taxi Service with App-Based Rides

The Belize City Council unveiled its fleet of four brand new electric vehicles today, at the launch of its new eRide Taxi Service. The new system mirrors the models of popular transportation services such as Uber and Lift, where customers can arrange pickup through the MiDriva mobile application. Customers will be able to track their cab through the app and have the option to pay either with cash or electronically. At the official launch held this morning, Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner spoke on how the new service plays into the council’s greater vision to revolutionize public transportation.

The council put out an open call for taxi members of the public to apply to drive the e-taxis. Thus far, two applicants have been successful and officially began their work today. Mayor Wagner said that the council has a lease agreement with the drivers and hopes that eventually, taxi drivers will completely take over e-transportation.

The council notes that, due to some issues with application permissions, the e-taxi feature on the MiDriva app is not functioning on Android devices at this time. The issue is expected to be resolved by next week.
