Belize City Council Prioritizes Safety for E-Transit Buses

Earlier in the news we told you of the E-Transit Bus that’s coming to Belize by the end of the year.  Mayor Bernard Wagner indicated that this will not compete with the current city runs when it comes to rates.  What the mayor did say, however, is that the council will be collaborating to ensure the safety of the buses used within the city.  The comment was made when Love News asked him of the recent incident where a child dropped out of a city bus on Albert Street.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “We can’t have everybody have new bus that will not happen. We don’t have the type of – bus owners have the financial capacity. So we have to be able to manage it along with them and see what is their story and speak to their story and see how best we can at the same time serve the residents of the city in a safe and efficient manner, but at the same time progressing towards e-mobility. We don’t issue permits that is done by the Department of Transport. We at the City Council is really not responsible for that arm of the transport system. Collaboration, very important with the Ministry of Transport. If we see an issue developing within the local transport in our city, we would formally address it through the Ministry of Transport. We have a fine relationship with the ministry and we would address it and we would see how it goes from there. But it’s about collaborating, it has to be about collaborating. It’s not a hard and fast decision. It’s always about ensuring collaboration occurs, proper communication occurs, and at the end of the day the residents benefit.”
