Amid growing calls for tougher penalties against animal abuse, the Belize City Council says it is taking steps to better protect horses used in the city’s horse and carriage industry. In recent weeks, members of the public have raised serious concerns over the treatment of these animals, particularly those used by tour operators to transport visitors around the city. Disturbing images have shown horses tied up and left under the sun for extended period, often without access to drinking water or proper shelter. The public backlash has been swift, with many calling on the City Council to step in and regulate the industry more aggressively to prevent further mistreatment. Speaking on the issue, Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner noted the council is aware of the concerns and is exploring possible solutions.
Wagner added that the Council is committed to working with relevant stakeholders.
