A Sandhill resident is out on bail tonight after being charged with the theft of a bed. 26-year-old Elon Emmanuel Tillett was arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of theft, accused of stealing a bed valued at $850 belonging to Anna Haylock. The alleged theft is said to have occurred on January 9, 2025. Tillett, who appeared in court unrepresented, initially pleaded guilty to the charge. He said that Haylock left the bed at his house last year for him to hold. Tillett explained that he knew Haylock through his brother, whom she used to date. He admitted to selling the bed, thus acknowledging his guilt. However, the Magistrate, concerned that Tillett might not fully understand the implications of his guilty plea, inquired if he wished to seek legal advice. Before accepting the guilty plea, the Magistrate then entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf, advising him to consider the matter and decide on his plea at his next court appearance. With no objections to bail, Tillett was granted self-bail of $500. He is scheduled to reappear in court on May 19, 2025.
