Belize City man almost sent to prison over $600 in unpaid fines

A man who was charged with loitering almost ended up in prison today, due to unpaid court fines. Twenty-six-year-old Abisaalle Ojeda appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court charged with a single count of loitering in a public place. He immediately pleaded guilty and was fined twenty five dollars plus five dollars cost of court. He was given until September 9 to pay his fine or he will face a month in prison. During the proceedings it was revealed that Ojeda owed six hundred thirty seven dollars for one conviction of damage to property and another for double riding on a bicycle. The court ordered him to pay half of the fine up front, but he could not and the warrant was being prepared for him to be sent to the Belize Central Prison. That’s when his mother and sister intervened and paid the amount which allowed him an extension to pay the balance.
