Police have formally arrested and charged twenty-seven-year-old Adrian Avaloy for aggravated assault following a shooting incident that occurred yesterday morning in Belize City. Thirty-two-year-old Kareem Smith reported to police that at about nine-thirty while walking on Flamboyant Street he was approached by Avaloy, who pointed a firearm at him and fired several shots in his direction. Luckily Smith, a fisherman by trade, was not hit. Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood says Avaloy attempted to flee the scene but a quick police response led to his detention.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer, Belize Police Department: “Kareem Smith was on Mahogany Street somewhere in the vicinity of Flamboyant yesterday morning when a blue Volkswagen Jetta approached him. One person exited the vehicle and opened fire on him. Luckily he was not hit but by the end of yesterday Adrian Avaloy has been charged for aggravated assault in relation with this incident because he was detained by officers who were not too far from the scene.”
A motive behind the shooting has not yet been determined.
