An investigation is ongoing into the shooting death of 30-year-old, Devon Bailey. The Belize City resident met his demise as he drove down Antelope Street on Friday night. Reporter Vejea Alvarez has the story.
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: It was only seventy days ago when this yard on Antelope Street was a murder scene that left 58 year old Randolph Gentle dead. Fast forward to Friday July 30 and police have once again pinpointed this location as the crime scene that led to the death of 30 year old Devon Bailey.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer, Belize Police Department: “Sometime around 9:40 police visited a scene where they saw a black car crashed into the roundabout between Uno and Shell Gas Station on Central American Boulevard. In the driver’s seat slumped over the steering wheel they found Devon Bailey. Initial investigation so far is that Bailey was driving on Antelope Street and upon reaching an area around #20 Antelope Street several shots were fired at his vehicle.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Reporter: Bailey’s murder is believed to have been carried out by persons known to him. The question tonight would be why and who would want Bailey dead.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer, Belize Police Department: “We’re looking for some persons of interest that we believe could shed some light into this investigation. The persons that we’re looking for are known to police so the officers know exactly who they are. At this stage we cannot really determine if it’s a gang related shooting or more like a friendship gone bad or friends gone bad. We are looking at several angles and we believe that his killer or killers were known to him.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Bailey is not new to the headlines as our archives show that in 2012 he was charged with the attempted murder of 41 year old Larry Sutherland. In 2015 he was remanded to prison for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition following a shooting on Antelope Street. He had also escaped death on several occasions including back in 2017 when he was involved in a road traffic accident that had him trapped inside a Lexus vehicle.
