A Belize City man was sentenced to just over two years in prison for aggravated assault against a police officer. (COURT VO 1). Twenty-one-year Kenyon Flores was found guilty on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for pulling a gun on Police Constable Luis Sontoya. He was sentenced to a total of two years and two months. On January 18, 2022, Sontoya was walking near Constitution Park in Belize City, when he heard a woman screaming for help. Despite being off duty at the time, the officer responded when he saw two men running towards Wood Street, one of them holding a brown purse that had been stolen from the woman. Sontoya attempted to block the path of the fleeing purse snatchers and the men dropped the purse when he intervened. When Sontoya reached to pick up the purse Flores pointed a gun at him and told him not to move. The officer positively identified Flores, saying he had known him for over four years. Flores has still not been charged in connection with the robbery, and his accomplice was never found.
