Belize City Man Shot During Curfew Hours

Here in Belize City, police are investigating a Friday night shooting. Just before midnight gunmen targeted and injured 34-year-old Michael Young. Young was on his motorcycle heading home on Zericote Street. It was when he arrived in front of his residence, two men emerged from behind a brown van that was parked a few feet away. One of the men then pulled out a firearm and unleashed a barrage of bullets at Young. He was then rushed by a police mobile to the hospital for treatment. According to Public Relations for the Police Department, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, when Young has recovers, he will need to provide a valid reason for breaching the curfew regulations.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “I cannot say whether or not he was involved in something before him going home but I know that investigators are trying to establish his reason for being out after curfew hours. It is almost three hours into the curfew but hopefully when Mr. Young can communicate with our investigators properly we would be able to answer questions.”

Reporter: Will he be charged for violating the curfew ?

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “Like I said we have to establish reasons for being out because we know that front line workers, certain people are exempted and can be out during that time. I know he’s a maintenance worker, I don’t know his reason for being out. I wish that they would state what type of maintenance or where he works because I know that some people even in that line of work are authorized to be out during certain hours especially during curfew hours so like you rightful asked and if he cannot establish why he was out making yourself a target to an incident like this then we the police have to also look at that angle and see what needs to be done.”
