Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner Endorsed by PUP
The Chairman of the People’s United Party (PUP) has officially announced the endorsement of Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner. After weeks of uncertainty, Wagner has received the support of the PUP, squashing Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard’s chance of challenging him. The two-time mayor had stated that he would not go to a convention after Pollard had sought to become a mayoral candidate for the 2024 municipal elections. Despite the young politician’s stance of not backing down, the PUP has struck a compromise between the men. The party’s chairman, Henry Charles Usher, spoke about the decision today and the rationale behind it.
Henry Charles Usher, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs Minister: “I believe that the convention for councilors will be November 5th in Belize City and thereafter the team will be endorsed and Mayor Wagner is being endorsed as the mayor. The PUP candidate for mayor, going for a third term, a threepeat.”
Reporter: Sir, it seems that Pollard didn’t want to back down. Are you able to say how you guys managed to have him step aside?
Henry Charles Usher, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs Minister: “I believe in the interest of the party and the interest of unity, Councillor Alan Pollard is running along with Mayor. This is a unity team and it is a dynamic team having Mayor Wagner and having Alan Pollard together definitely signifies that the team is united, it makes sure that the PUP will once again be victorious in the municipal polls in Belize City.”
