Belize City Mechanic Survives Assassination Attempt: Gunmen Escape

A Belize City mechanic is hospitalized after surviving an attempt on his life. Last night, 47-year-old Eugene Gabourel was socializing with a group of men while working on a vehicle on Barbara Harris Street. Gabourel says around 9:15, two gunmen exited a nearby yard and opened fire on the group. The men then made their escape by running back into the yard. Gabourel was hit to the body and taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero provided additional details.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “He was there along with several other persons working on a vehicle when a male person came by and fired several shots towards the direction, only he received a gunshot injury. We are looking for one suspect in regards to this shooting.”

Reporter: Was he the target ?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “He was along with several other persons so we are not certain who was the target. There were several persons at the area at the time.”

Gabourel’s shooting is believed to be connected to a feud between factions in the area.
