The Belize City Council says plans for a floating boardwalk along the city’s southern foreshore are gaining momentum, following the successful completion of a feasibility study that has identified the area as an ideal location for the project. City officials confirm that the study found the proposed floating boardwalk to be technically sound and well-suited for the stretch of coastline along the southern foreshore, where coastal erosion and seawall degradation have long been a concern. The project is expected to serve multiple purposes, including protecting existing infrastructure, creating a safe public space, and enhancing the city’s tourism and recreational offerings. According to the council, the positive findings now clear the way for the project to advance into its next phase, which will involve more detailed design work, environmental considerations, stakeholder engagement, and financing arrangements. Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner says the project has also received important backing at the national level, with central government now formally on board. Wagner notes that discussions are ongoing and that the council is working toward a specific deadline as it pushes to move the project from concept to implementation.
The proposed floating boardwalk is expected to run along the southern foreshore area, transforming what officials describe as an underutilized space into a vibrant waterfront corridor. In addition to offering protection for the seawall, the development is projected to support small business opportunities, leisure activities, and climate-resilient urban development. Mayor Wagner says the city council will continue consultations with stakeholders, including nearby businesses and residents, as the planning process continues. He adds that the project aligns with Belize City’s broader push toward climate-smart infrastructure and sustainable urban renewal. If timelines are met, officials say the floating boardwalk could become one of the city’s most significant coastal enhancement projects in recent years, combining environmental protection with public access and economic opportunity.
