Belize City National Fire Service to Finally Get Its Own Building
After almost two years of being housed at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, the Belize City National Fire Service will soon have a building of its own. In November 2021, the government stated that construction would have commenced last year, but it never happened. Today, Minister of Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet, explained that there was a hold-up with the land documents for the proposed Chetumal Street location, but that is now resolved.
Orlando Habet, Area Representative, Cayo North East: “Our plans as we had mentioned we just were using that area as something temporary. It has gone a little bit farther and longer than we wanted it to go but finally I was informed two days ago that I think that now the paperworks for the property for the land on Chetumal Street has been signed and so the department is getting the title to it and so we can present this now to the US Embassy SouthCom who have promised that they will find the funding for us to build the fire station and we had even requested that if they can look at providing a little bit more funding than they did for the one in Belmopan and the one in Dangriga since this one in Belize City will be the headquarters and I think they have agreed to do so and so hopefully soon we can commence the construction of that facility.”
The Ministry of Disaster Risk Management says construction will soon begin for a new fire station in Belize City. Minister Habet added that GOB plans to construct two additional fire stations in Belize City.
