A man was attacked, stabbed, and shot inside his home last night in Belize City during a brazen home invasion. The incident unfolded around eight o’clock on Antelope Street Extension and left 33-year-old, Linsford McKenzie Jr. with injuries across his body. Police say the attack was the result of a robbery gone wrong, but McKenzie’s family believes he was set up. Reporter Vejea Alvarez tells us more.
Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: On Sunday night Linsford Mackenzie Jr. was assaulted inside the comfort of his home by a group of men with malicious intent. Just after 7.30, three men armed with guns and a knife, stormed Mackenzie’s home on Antelope Street. The men attacked the 33 year old and his step daughter’s boyfriend. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, says Mackenzie was then shot and stabbed in the head before the men made good their escape.
Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police: “Information is that he was at home with two other persons when three male persons came to the house and he struggled and sued between them. One of the persons fired a single shot that caught him and he was also stabbed. The persons then fled from the area. We are seeking one suspect in regards to this shooting.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: Mckenzie was rushed to the hospital and treated for his injuries. His father, Linsford Sr., says the shooting came as a complete shock because according to him, his son doesn’t have any enemies.
Linsford Mckenzie Sr, Father of Victim: “They called me from the hospital so when I went there I was talking to him and he got shot I think it went through here and came out his buttock area and he got stabbed in the head. Officially I don’t know what to say about that but it threw me off a lot and it made me start to cry and that is what I don’t like because my son doesn’t mess with anybody. My son is from work to home, work hard and from he was young coming up the are working and I show them the right way. My son doesn’t gangbang, he doesn’t mess with anybody. He keeps to himself.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: Why was an attempt made on McKenzie’s life ? Police say the motive is believed to be robbery.
Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police: “The motive we have established is an aggravated burglary, they wanted to rob the place or the house of their personal belongings.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:His father believes that he may have been set up. Did you receive any reports like that?
Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police: “No, at this time all we have is that they came there and then the struggle ensued and he was shot.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:While police believe it was a robbery gone wrong, Mckenzie’s father says he believes his son was set up and intentionally targeted.
Linsford Mckenzie Sr, Father of Victim: “The woman has to let go of this man and make this man go about his business, you understand? But this man don’t want to leave this woman. So the only thing that I say, this woman, what do I call it, this woman like is playing her and something is fishy with this woman. So all I have to say I told him last night when you get released from Karl Heusner come home to me I will come for you when you get released called me and come and get a room to stay and lock off that woman, block her number completely, have nothing to do with her, put your money in the bank be somebody in life.”
