For over three years, a cloud of suspicion hung over Randy Nelson Green, a resident of Taylor’s Alley, Belize City. Green was accused of being a member of the Taylor’s Alley Bloods Gang. Today, that cloud has finally lifted.  Green, who appeared unrepresented in court, was freed of the charge due to want of prosecution. The trial, originally set for today, did not proceed.  Green’s ordeal began on Thursday, November 18, 2021, when he was charged with being part of a criminal gang. Since then, he has faced multiple remands, including a three-month stint in September 2024 under a State of Emergency (SOE).  Following his release, Green expressed his relief and frustration. He vehemently denied ever being a gang member and emphasized his role as a family man with a child to support.

Green urged young people to stay away from negative influences and avoid putting themselves at risk of similar accusations.  Green’s case is not unique. In 2024, a similar charge against the Meighan brothers, Tyrone and Ellis, was dismissed by a Senior Magistrate in Court #3. These acquittals reflect the increasing difficulty of securing convictions solely on gang affiliation charges.  Previously, some individuals opted for plea bargains to avoid lengthy sentences. However, with the growing severity of gang-related crimes, many are now choosing to fight the charges in court. This shift highlights the evolving legal landscape surrounding gang membership accusations in Belize.  One such example is Javan Clare, who initially pleaded not guilty to gang affiliation charges but later changed his plea and received an 18-month jail sentence.
