Belize City Resident Sentenced to 15 Years for Rape, Attempted Rape, and Sexual Assault

49-year-old, Giovanni Burns, was sentenced today to fifteen years in prison after he was found guilty four months ago of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.  The Belize City resident was convicted for raping a 24-year-old woman in February 2019.  Justice Nigel Pilgrim started off the sentencing at 15 years, but then added another 15 years for attempted rape and four and a half years for sexual assault.  Deductions were made to his sentencing based on mitigating factors and testimony of a good character prior to the crime.  In the end, Burns will serve a total of fifteen years commencing July 23, 2023 when he was found guilty.  The incident occurred on February 1, 2019 when Burns dragged the woman into a yard and forced her to perform oral sex on him.  He also made attempts at penetration, but had failed to do so as the victim viciously fought back.  Love News understands that the sentencing was based on multiple factors including the victim impact assessment report.
