The Belize City Council and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) held a meeting today to follow up on collaboration initiatives. Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, accompanied by Councilor Stephanne Hamilton and members of the Belize City Delegation, met with Her Excellency Lily Li-Wen Hsu, the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) at City Hall. The meeting served as an important follow-up after the delegation attended the 2025 Smart City Summit and Expo in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, back in March. City officials described the summit as an eye-opening experience, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and innovative ideas for urban development – everything from AI-powered transportation to sustainable infrastructure. They believe the knowledge gained there can directly shape a more connected and environmentally friendly Belize City. Discussions today also focused on strengthening ties with Belize City’s sister city, Kaohsiung. Mayor Wagner specifically highlighted two potential areas for future partnership with Taiwan: expanding the city’s current e-Mobility project to include more electric buses, and introducing electric bikes, or e-bikes, to promote cleaner urban travel options. The Mayor expressed gratitude to Ambassador Hsu and the Embassy for the invitation to the summit and their ongoing support.
